Bob Sheppard, of Kittery, son of James Sheppard, will show his video, “Reflections of Maine’s Tuskegee Airman,” and answer questions about his father and the famed airmen. Tuskegee Airmen were one of the first African-American fighter air crews in the U.S. military. Sheppard will speak about his father’s experiences as a Tuskegee Airman.

Despite a Pentagon study claiming that negro pilots were unfit to fly high performance aircraft, a Maine man, James Sheppard enlisted in a US Army Air Corps experiment, that came be known as the Tuskegee Airmen. His son Bob Sheppard, a former broadcast journalist, co-produced a documentary telling the story of one man's quest to play a role in World War ll and build a career in America’s burgeoning aviation industry at a time when there were few role models for African Americans. The presentation shares a personal story of hardship, courage and determination through period images and music
